Holidays in Cres - how to get there and where to stay, beaches and prices

Cres travel guide: how to get to and where to stay, what to see and where to sunbathe. The best things to do on Cres: places to see, signature attractions and beaches.

The island with the sonorous name Cres is known not only for sharing the title of Croatia's largest island with Krk, but more as a great vacation destination. The very word "island" is associated with detachment from everyday life and something out of the ordinary. And Cres, apart from its magnificent beaches, pristine forests, rolling hills and lakes, has many historical sights, the oldest of which date back to the pre-Slavic period of Croatian history.

How to get there

The island of Cres is conveniently reached by ferry from the Istrian peninsula, while the island of Krk can be reached by ferry and is connected to the island of Lošinj (once part of Cres) by a drawbridge. Alternatively, you can get to the island from Zagreb or even from Ljubljana by bus (via the ferry crossing).

Hotels in Cres

There are many Cres Croatia Hotels, but only a few of them are really worth staying in. The Hotels Porozina is one of those places. It's situated in a perfect spot, right by the beach. The views from the hotel are beautiful, and it's just a short walk to the town centre. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. Another excellent option is the Anica Solis. This place is also right by the beach, and has wonderful views. The hotel is modern and cosy, and the staff are super friendly. The only downside is that it can be a bit expensive. If you're looking for something a bit more budget-friendly, the Hotel Adria is a great option. It's a little bit further from the beach, but it's clean and comfortable, and the staff are friendly and helpful.

The sea and the beaches

Cres is full of secluded coves and beaches, some of which are Blue Flag certified. The beaches are mainly made of fine pebbles, and many are equipped with special concrete slabs, which make it easier to access the sea. Trees along the island's shores keep the island cool and protected from the sun.

Cres attractions

Cres is situated in the north of the country in the Bay of Kvarner, not far from the Istrian peninsula and its eternal rival, Krk. In ancient times, the island was inhabited by the Illyrians, from whom the ruins of the settlements - "gradins", which can be found everywhere on Cres, have survived.

There are three smaller settlements on the island: Cres, Osor and Merag, and several villages. The largest town and tourist centre is Cres. The main tourist life and many historical monuments are concentrated here. The most famous are the Triple Gate at the entrance to the Old City, the Franciscan and Benedictine monasteries, the Arsan Patrice Palace and the City Hall which now houses the Lapidarium Museum. In the latter, by the way, one can see the famous Valun Plaque, one of the oldest monuments of Glagolitic script.

In the Lapidarium Museum in the town of Cres, one can see the famous Valunska plate, one of the oldest monuments of the Glagolitic script.

Osor is famous for its magnificent Bishop's Palace on the main square and its 15th century cathedral. During the Middle Ages Osor was an important trading port.

A traditional attraction for travellers is the historically important site of Lubenice, one of the first settlements on the Cres, situated on a high rock. In Lubenice you can see the 15th century church of St. Anthony. Within the depth of the island, amidst green hills, near the village of Vrana, lies the Vrana Lake, which is 70 meters deep and has a large number of fish.

Nature on Cres is so diverse that one cannot believe how one can find green forests, hills, lakes and rivers in such a relatively small area, as well as numerous rare animals, some of which are only found here.

Outdoor activities

Hiring a boat or catamaran, scuba diving, sailing or windsurfing in the Cres is no problem. Hiking and cycling along the trails is undoubtedly fun, as is gazing at the unique fauna of the area. Music festivals and other cultural events are also often held here.
